This morning a few swift clicks changed my mood from grumpy to upbeat. Booking a trip to Paris was the last thing on my to-do list but suddenly I knew it was just what the doctor ordered. Seeing a confirmation number pop up to a fun, hip destination in the near future seriously repaired my spirit. I had to contemplate it for a few days now as my financial situation is bordering dire. I mentally justified all the ways I could make this trip possible. I would write about the journey. I would take a hostel instead of a hotel. I would cook in the shared kitchens. I would live on 5 euros a day. I would cut out lattes and magazines until the flight date. And so on and so forth. There are people in my life who think I travel too much. Can you travel too much? I love traveling. I even love airports and flying. I even love waiting for delayed planes or having to waste time while waiting for a 3pm hotel check-in. This particular journey will be to Paris, to wander around the streets of Montmartre, to grab coffee in the Marais, to window shop in the Latin Quarter.

Traveling seems to wake me up. Is travel essential to the soul? To mine it seems to be. As soon as the train pulls away from my town and I stow my suitcase under the chair, a little smile comes to my face and stays there the entire journey. I wonder about the people around me. I dwell on how I will spend my first few hours at my destination. I read, I prepare, I dream. I have been to Paris before, in fact I lived there once, years ago, for a month. Aside from that I have been there several times. Which is why I made a special agenda. With thanks to the internet and guide books, I am going to go to places I have not yet discovered in Paris, from an all night american diner in the 12th arrondissement, to a cafe where you can sew your own garment whilst sipping tea, which has just opened last year and is the latest trendy thing to do in the Marais on a weekend.

Leaving familiarity behind and heading off for an adventure is under-rated. For me, each and every time traveling helps me see the bigger picture of life and takes me out of my day to day thoughts and struggles. It has a way of waking me up and bringing forward into my consciousness the potential of my future and goals. It gives me the freedom to explore who I am, to remember who I want to be. Sometimes I get stuck at home, thinking of small things that don’t really matter and dealing with things on auto-pilot and without enthusiasm. When I go somewhere else, I forget the ”small stuff” and I open my eyes and really look around at the world, the people and the beauty of life. I am not leaving for Paris until the weekend after next, but in my mind I am already schlepping my suitcase up the stairs of Montmartre, looking enthusiastically for my hostel and taking in the atmosphere of the city of lights.

For so many of us, the entire European continent is synonymous with romance. The rich history and impressive architecture in addition to the legendary culinary culture make Europe a favorite travel destination for lovers and honeymooners; here are ten of the can’t-miss spots on the European map.

Venice, Italy – The first thing that comes to mind for most people at the mention of Venice is an enchanting gondola ride through the canals. The Rialto Bridge and Bridge of Sighs are often counted among the most romantic spots in the world, so be sure not to miss them.

Paris, France – Nothing says “I love you” like a weekend in Paris. The City of Lights is a go-to setting for romantic film and literature; iconic sites like the Eiffel Tower and the Louvre have been the backdrop for many a breathtaking scene. Can’t-miss opportunity: the sunset through the Arc de Triomphe.

Santorini, Greece – The slow pace and appreciation for the finer things in life make a trip to the Greek Islands an unforgettable experience. Shops and homes that cling to the volcanic cliffs of Santorini are an awe-inspiring sight, while the black sand beaches and ancient villages provide excellent relaxation and cultural enrichment opportunities.

Prague, Czech Republic – Soaring gothic architecture, winding cobblestone paths and castle walking tours all come together to create a picturesque setting in Prague, while the local vineyards and restaurants provide a one-of-a-kind dining experience. Boat tours through the city often include libations and live accordion music, with visitors urged to kiss under the bridges.

Ibiza, Spain – For the swanky set, few cities are as exciting and amorous as Ibiza. Internationally renowned for a booming nightlife and high-end dining, a glamorous stay in this Spanish city is sure to impress even the most seasoned travelers.

Berlin, Germany – One of the forerunners for trendsetting in underground art and music scenes as well as a city rich with history and culture, Berlin has something to fit the needs of any traveling couple. The incredible creative energy and tolerant attitude of Berliners makes it an ideal spot for lovebirds of the artsy persuasion.

Rome, Italy – The heart of Italy practically pulses with romance; from the legendary lovers’ destination of Trevi Fountain to the glory of St. Peter’s Basilica, the options are almost endless. Lingering over a glass of Italian wine at a sidewalk cafe is sure to lead to starry-eyed murmurings and promises of eternal love in the Eternal City.

Lisbon, Portugal – For those who like their romance with a twist of tragedy, a visit to the Quinta das Lagrimas just outside of Lisbon isn’t to be missed. The legend of star-crossed lovers Prince Pedro and Ines de Castro permeates the gorgeous setting; strolling through the lush gardens only adds to the air of desperate adoration.

Budapest, Hungary – This Hungarian city on the banks of the Danube has experienced a revival in the last two decades, making it a favorite new arrival to the romantic-getaway table. Pedal carriage tours of the jaw-dropping architecture and the famous thermal baths of Szechenyi are just two of the incredible experiences that Budapest has to offer.

Edinburgh, Scotland – There’s a reason that so many romance novels are set in Scotland; few places on the planet can compete with the alluring mystery and romantic past of the Highlands. Touring Edinburgh Castle and making the short trek to the many scenic villages makes for a romantic vacation steeped in history.

Whether you’re celebrating a new marriage, the anniversary of an established one or simply planning a romantic trip for two, there’s something for every taste in Europe. With a bit of research, you can plan an entire itinerary from the comfort of your home office.

Once you have decided on your destination and flights, then there is the difficult part of choosing the right accommodation for your holiday. The type of accommodation you choose may often be dependent upon who is going on holiday. If you are a couple, a couple with a baby, or even two friends, then a hotel maybe the best solution. Not only can you choose whether to have a double or twin room, but hotels also offer the convenience of being able to dine in. Very often hotels are located in city centres or near to other prime tourist destinations, including beaches. The price of staying in a hotel will usually be dependent on your budget. Hotels are also ideal for short or weekend break and some hotels will offer all-inclusive deals including food and drink for the duration of the holiday.

If however it is a larger family group that will be going on holiday, or even a group of friends, then self-catering accommodation may be a better solution as well as it offering more convenience for longer holidays. Many European destinations as well as some further afield offer villas as the main type of self-catering accommodation.

Advantages to renting villas include their locations. They are often situated away from major tourist destinations making them ideal if you prefer some quiet time on your holiday. Because villas can often be located off the beaten-track, this can give you a chance to experience some of the local life. Many villas will have their own pool, meaning that unlike big complexes you are able to spend as much or as little time as you like in there.

Villas are also available in different styles, some are traditional villas, whereas others are of an extremely modern design, or even completely unique. Villas also offer all modern conveniences, including washers and dryers, which makes it easier to manage the family laundry while away. Some villas may also contain facilities such as a games room or spa. You may also find that villas are more accommodating to additional requirements, such as those of a disabled guest.

If you are staying as a family, a private villa holiday can also give you the freedom from having set mealtimes or menus, which with young children can cause problems. Because villas can comfortably accommodate a large number of guests they also have enough room for everyone to be able to spend time in their own space.

Travelling can be stressful at the best of times and though it may not be possible to make it totally stress free, there are a few things that you can do to minimise the stress.

Make sure that the end date on your passport is acceptable to the destination where you will be travelling. Usually a British passport has to be valid for at least six months after the date that you will be returning to the UK. Do check this to make sure that it will not need to be longer than six months. If you are unsure of visa requirements for your destination then you can check online with the Home Office, or at an embassy belonging to your destination country.

Make a list beforehand of key documents that you will need such as passport, visa, travel insurance and driving licence and do a final check of these the day before. If travelling out of the EU, you should also make sure that you have details of your accommodation to hand as you may be required to show this information at passport/border control.

Make sure that you have appropriate travel insurance and that it covers you for any activities, including skiing, that you may be doing while on holiday. If you will need a hire car then it is also easier to arrange this in advance of your travel. Take note that the car hire company may require other documentation from you as well as your driving licence. Make yourself aware of any key driving laws beforehand, especially if you have some distance to drive from the airport to your final destination.

Always be aware of size and weight restrictions for both hand and hold luggage and you should always weigh cases before travel to make sure that you are under the weight limit. Not only are there considerable charges for excess luggage weight, but you will also be held up through the check-in process.

If you are carrying hand luggage only, there is a good chance that you can use the online check-in service. Most airports now offer this facility, allowing you to check-in online up to 24 hours before departure.

Be aware of what you are unable to carry in your hand luggage. Information on restricted or prohibited items is available from your airline. Whichever airport you are travelling from you can also save time beforehand by putting your liquids in a clear plastic bag – if this is not required, you can easily slip them back into your case.

Always be aware of duty free allowances, especially when travelling outside the EU and if you want further guidance about stress free flying from or to UK airports, then make UKairports your main information guide.

Holidays are excellent opportunities to get away from it all and experience something a bit different from everyday life. Depending on what interests you, holidays can include relaxation, playing sports, exploring a city or soaking up some of the culture local to your chosen destination. The activities engaged in when on holiday vary from location to location but many popular places offer a mix of all of the above so there is plenty on offer for everyone to enjoy.

Relaxation holidays are particularly popular in hot and sunny climes where lounging on the beach or beside the pool are ideal pastimes. Taking a dip in the sea, reading on a sun lounger or simply building up your tan are the perfect way to get away from the hustle and bustle of working life and just get some time for yourself. Coastal resorts across the world offer this type of holiday activity, though many inland destinations will also have a great relaxing poolside atmosphere too. Sun and sea aren`t always necessary though and blissful relaxation can also be found at spas and country retreats whatever the climate.

Sporting holidays take many different forms, depending on which exciting activity most takes your fancy. One of the most popular is a winter sports holiday, where skiing, snowboarding and tobogganing are combined with wonderful snowy landscapes and a fantastic social scene to enjoy off the slopes. As with beach holidays, winter sports trips are available the world over, from the Alps in Europe to the Rockies in North America. Water sports holidays are also a great experience and both the sea and lakes provide great locations for activities such as surfing, sailing and diving. For those who prefer to keep their feet on dry land, walking, climbing and cycling are also great activities that can be found on holidays across the globe.

City breaks offer a very different experience to either of the above options. These locations are full of life and usually have an exciting and buzzing atmosphere, rich with retail opportunities during the day and nightlife after the sun sets. Most cities have plenty of hotels, some with an indulgent degree of luxury, that allow visitors to base themselves in these great urban centres with a grand degree of style. Cities also provide a vibrant mix of different peoples and provide perhaps the best opportunities to leave behind what you know and discover something new, different and invigorating.

Cultural activities are another great way to fill your time on holiday, whether this be through experiencing the local cuisine, or perhaps famous regional beverages, such as wine and beer, or through soaking up the history that so many parts of the world are deeply imbued with. In addition, the culture of the arts can provide great interest for holidaymakers; whether this comes from visiting a gallery, attending a musical performance or using box office theatre tickets to soak up all the drama of the stage.

All in all, there is no shortage of great activities to be enjoyed on holiday, from exhilarating sports to peaceful relaxation and from exploring bustling cities to experiencing unique cultures.

With so many cruise options available to choose from, it`s easy to get confused over the whole issue when you`re deciding which type is best for you. Cruises can be both action-packed or relaxed, with amenities such as casinos, swimming pools, live entertainment and gourmet dining. The range and variety on offer, with regard to both style and size of ship and on-board facilities can seem overwhelming.

First time cruise passengers are especially likely to find the process of choosing their cruise daunting as there are so many different options to take into consideration. Things like itineraries, what kind of cabin would be most suitable, length of cruise and price ranges may present a list of options and considerations that`s too long for comfort.

You can make the process of choosing and booking a cruise much simpler by asking yourself a few well chosen questions:

Budget

Be honest about the budget you have for your cruise. Most people are likely to compromise somewhere, such as duration of cruise, type of cabin or the number of shore excursions they include. Most cruises include meals and onboard entertainment, with extra being charged for drinks at the bar or spa services.

Cruise Duration

If you`re not sure whether cruising is for you, it`s probably best to choose a shorter cruise. Cruises from just a few days to longer trips lasting a month or more offer plenty of choice whatever your preference.

Casual or Formal

Do you enjoy dressing up, or are you more comfortable in casual wear? Some cruises have formal nights where dressing for dinner is expected. If this really puts you off, look for cruises that give you either a casual option or that don`t have formal occasions at all.

Cabin Choice

Would you prefer an inside cabin, or one with a window or balcony? Balcony cabins are especially romantic for honeymooners, whether first or second-timers, but if you`re cruising on a strict budget then choosing an inside cabin may free up funds for more shore excursions or bar drinks. Decide which is more important to you and book accordingly.

Destinations

While cruises are available in just about every popular tourist region of the world, some areas are more popular than others.

When most people think of cruises, the words `luxury` and `exotic` are also brought to mind, with Caribbean cruises high on the list of favourites. Famous for its perfect beaches, fabulous weather and laid-back, relaxed attitude, the Caribbean Islands sum up everything many people expect of a cruise.

People are travelling further and further afield nowadays and holidays in the Far East or the Americas are no longer as unusual as they once were. Having said that, when looking for a holiday, Europe is still hard to beat and there are some great resorts available; all within relatively easy reach of the UK.

It is fair to say that when considering what Europe`s top resorts are, the countries around the Mediterranean are the prime locations. The warm weather, beautiful beaches and clear sea are always popular with visitors. Seaside resorts in France, Greece, Spain, Italy and Portugal are perennial favourites.

In France, Cannes, on the French Riviera, is considered to be the jewel in the crown. With over 300 days of sun every year, it is glamorous yet laid back. Nice is another great resort in France. Typified by pebble, rather than sandy, beaches it is welcoming and relaxing.

With its thousands of islands, Greece has always been a top destination in Europe. The Ionian Islands, including Corfu, have many resorts for visitors. There is history and culture on these islands as well as some great nightlife. On Corfu, both Ermones and Paleokastritsa are highly recommended. Crete, of course, is rightly famed and has some extremely popular resorts particularly on the east coast. The island of Mykonos is very lively in the south whilst the northern part of the island is more peaceful. There are lots of great resorts to suit everyone.

The Spanish Mediterranean resorts have long been favourites with British tourists and it`s easy to see why. The Costa del Sol has many lovely resorts. The most well-known are Marbella and Malaga. Marbella, with its famed marina and casino, has a glamorous image. Malaga is rightly known for its long stretch of beaches and having been a tourist favourite since the fifties has a good tourist infrastructure. Nerja, on the eastern end of the Costa del Sol is a lovely less touristy resort town with fabulous views of the Med. Palma, Majorca is another holiday favourite. Along with its lovely beaches, it also has a vibrant nightlife.

Italy also boasts some of Europe`s top resorts. Amalfi is perhaps Italy`s best known resort. With the stunning contrasts from its limestone cliffs rising sharply above the Med`s rich blue waters, the scenery, if nothing else is amazing. The town is relaxing and boasts some nice beaches. Monterosso al Mare is another popular Italian resort. It has a wide range of hotels and is popular with both foreign and local tourists.

Last, but by no means least, is Portugal. The Algarve is the most recognised resort area of the country and it is here you can find the highly regarded resort towns of Lagos and Albufeira. Lagos boasts some beautiful beaches along with plenty of restaurants and bars making it a great holiday destination. Albufeira is smaller than Lagos but still has plenty to offer the visitor. Close to Faro airport, it is easy to find a cheap holiday in Albufeira, though the quality of the accommodation and facilities available there are of an excellent standard.

While most tend to prefer taking their holidays during the summer months, many find that winter is the time when they really need to take a break. Well winter is certainly upon us again and so now is the time to consider making plans for that vital winter getaway. The first choice to make will be whether to go for a destination in the sun or make the most of the advantages that the winter climate offers and opt for a skiing holiday or a hike up a snowy mountain.

Either way, the most essential thing you will have to bear in mind is to pack accordingly. There is little point in travelling to somewhere such as Panama, for example, (temperatures hit 82 degrees in winter here) and packing a whole range of woolly jumpers. Similarly, you will need to pack accordingly if you are jetting off to somewhere like Ottawa where temperatures can drop below freezing.

The important thing is to make sure your suitcase or shoulder bag is packed well. There are a few things you can do to ensure you make the most of your packing. For example, you can always roll up socks or ties and put them in your shoes. In addition, the shoes themselves should ideally be packed along the bag`s perimeter. Finally, tailored clothes should go at the bottom with t-shirts and sweaters at the top.

If you do choose to go on a skiing holiday, there are one or two essential packing tips to consider. First a fitted goose-down coat is by far the warmest garment there is. Second, don`t forget to pack a pair of ski boots, preferably ones that have gripping soles. Lastly, as far as trousers are concerned, try and pick the darkest pairs you can find as the dark colours absorb more light.

For the pick of winter skiing destinations, Lake Tahoe is among the finest. Not only does the area have more downhill ski resorts than just about anywhere else, but in winter the sparkling Tahoe Basin and surrounding national forests and parks make this resort one of the most enchanting around.

Alternatively, if hot sun is what you want, the Caribbean in winter will never disappoint. Which of the islands you choose, of course, will come down to a matter of taste. St Barts, for example, is perfect for lovers of fine food and a vibrant nightlife scene. Sandy lane, on the other hand is ideal for golf enthusiasts who will have the choice of three major championship courses.

If however, you are thinking of staying closer to home and just taking a short break, Colchester Zoo has now developed into one of Europe`s finest and makes the ideal destination for a family day out. Indeed, the zoo has recently been awarded the `Large Visitor Attraction of the Year Award`. It is home to over 270 species, all housed in the 60 acres of glorious parklands and also includes more than 50 displays, play areas and road trains. In addition, Colchester Zoo discount vouchers can often be found online, making this one of the best choices for a quick winter getaway.

There are no hotels in this world that will allow you to wake up by the beach one morning, the mountains the next and in the depths of a forest on the third.

Camping, on the other hand, offers a complete freedom to roam anywhere in the world. A tent gives you the ability to explore any country with a modest budget and get away from the concrete towers of popular resorts.

With a few simple steps and early planning a camping holiday can be a hugely tranquil break when you escape the television to enjoy the sights and sounds of nature outside the canvas.

Most countries have an organized network of campsites to cater for any wallet and taste. A trip through France for example can include sites in Normandy and Brittany to enjoy the history, sites outside Bordeaux for the wine and no end of sites along the south coast to enjoy the beaches.

Further afield hardy campers can spend nights under canvas on Australia`s largest sandbar, Fraser Island, or in one of the world`s most remote corners at Torres del Paine, Chile.

A tent and the willingness to camp really are a key to a world of freedom and beauty.

But before you load your tent in the back of the car and disappear for a few weeks away don`t forget to pack a few essentials. Obviously the best place to start is with a tent. This doesn`t have to be an expensive piece of kit, but make sure it will protect you from the elements. After you have secured a tent grab some sleeping bags. These need not be expensive either, but make sure they are warm.

You will need to eat, so before you leave do not forget to pick up some cooking gear. Most public campgrounds provide a grill and picnic table. Just in case, though, you can buy cheap low profile burners and small gas canisters from any good camping shop.

Once prepared you are free to enjoy the Val de Cantobre in Aveyron in France, surrounded by outstanding landscapes, or The Four Seasons in the Golden Triangle in Thailand. Spain offers camping grounds set in tropical gardens near sandy beaches.

It is not just far-flung exotic locations that become a joy when you are spending your nights under canvas. The British Isles has a fantastic array of sites dotted all over them, camp on the banks of Loch Lomond, or the wonderful countryside of Norfolk.

Why not give you and your family a great camping getaway and try one of the many fantastic UK campsites such as Cherry Tree Holiday Park reviews suggest it offers all the romance of camping and a few home comforts thrown in; a swimming pool, bar and gym.

Skiing is a sport largely associated with the affluent, but it doesn’t have to be. It’s an activity that can be enjoyed by all. It doesn’t have an extensive rule book and the basics can be learnt in a couple of hours. If you’re determined to ski without spending a fortune some careful planning can ensure you make it to the slopes without breaking the bank.

Research your dates carefully. The general rule is Christmas and New Year is expensive. School holidays also see a hike in prices, so look for deals on ski chalets that fall outside these periods. Peak-season varies from country to country and a quick Google search on a particular resort should tell you which times of year will severely dent your bank account. Avoiding these times can mean more for your money.

Book a self catered ski chalet. The European property boom has seen huge investment in new builds surrounding all the ski resorts in The Alps. Renting a self-catering chalet can be luxury at just the right price and with many properties bought and used by seasoned skiers, you may find you’re renting a small palace with ensuite spas and media systems included. Self-catered accommodation is very common in Europe and even the most basic chalets provide a comfortable abode. Self catering also means eating for a lot less than the cost of the local speciality (usually starting at 7€ a plate) Continental beers are also much cheaper in the supermarkets than in the bars, allowing you to enjoy yourself without emptying your wallet.

Driving to a resort on The Continent can not only save you money, but it’ll also be a fun road trip. Sharing petrol and ferry costs can make the trip surprisingly cheap.

If you’re hiring your equipment, research what’s on offer. In some cases the resort will have several shops offering competitive rentals. In other cases the website you’re booking with will have good equipment deals. However, don’t hand-over your credit card details until you know you have the best deal. It may take a little time to research, but it’s better than getting stuck with poor equipment.

Research the resorts and what they charge versus what they offer. Consider just how many kilometres of snow you’ll actually ski during your trip. What’s your ability? You might find a smaller resort gives you what you need for a week of skiing. Seeking out a resort popular with locals can also get you better value for money. One rule: the further east you go, the better the price.

Plan your skiing and buy your ski pass accordingly. Will you actually ski seven days straight, or will you take a day or two to explore the area? Answering this question ahead of time can save you some cash. Alternatively, you can buy a local pass rather than an area pass. Concentrating your skiing in one area is a great way to master more difficult slopes. It doesn’t just save you money; it could also improve your skiing.

With a little careful planning you can continue to enjoy ski chalet breaks on a budget.
